Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with Pathfinders RC&D, will host a prairie and pollinator field day Wednesday, November 11 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Buena Vista University. The no cost event is open to farmers and landowners and includes a complimentary meal.
This field day aims to assist farmers and landowners with establishing and maintaining perennial vegetation, including trees and shrubs. These areas offer many benefits including pollinator habitat, reducing soil erosion from sensitive areas, building soil health, improving wildlife, and providing beauty to the landscape.
The field day will begin with Tim Youngquist, Iowa State University STRIPS program farmer liaison, will share results from over 15 years of research on prairie strips as well as practical recommendations for how to incorporate prairie on the agricultural landscape. Lynne Campbell with Pathfinders RC&D will highlight project efforts to increase pollinator habitat and discuss the importance of the monarch butterfly as both pollinator and cultural icon. Weather permitting, a tour of the on-campus prairie with Dr. Geoffrey Ecker, Assistant Professor of Agronomy at Buena Vista University, will conclude the field day.
The field day be held at the Buena Vista University Multipurpose Room – Siebens Forum, 610 West 4th Street, Storm Lake, IA 50588. Visitor parking is available in lots L, K, B or D. The event is offered at no cost and open to farmers and landowners, though we require reservations to ensure adequate space and food. For reasonable accommodations and to RSVP please contact Liz Ripley at 515-294-5429 or ilf@iastate.edu by Nov. 4. Attendees will be entered in a drawing for ISU Prairie Strips honey.
This field day is supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Iowa Learning Farms field days and workshops are supported by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
